A Zimdaansaal riddim is a music instrumental that is produced for the sole purpose of featuring various recording artists to come up with a collection of songs using the same beat.

This means when a record producer makes an instrumental, the next thing they do is give it a title e.g., "XYZ Riddim," or maybe "ABC Riddim", etc. From there it's a matter of contacting numerous artists who may fit the style of that riddim in question.

If chosen recording artists are available (depending on their schedule and willingness to participate) they will all engage in a songwriting process followed by recording lead and background vocals over the same instrumental.

What are riddim themes?

A riddim theme is nothing but a preconceived subject matter that is meant to be used by recording artists as a guideline during the songwriting process.

An example of a riddim theme can be love, and as such, all music artists invited to feature on a riddim will have to stick to that idea by writing lyrics that correspond to the topic thereof.

How useful are riddims?

The main advantage of riddims is: an artist on the come-up can jump-start his or her career by being featured on a riddim that may go viral (i.e. if it turns out to be a successful music project).

This exposure will draw more attention to new artists by giving them a little bit of clout which they can utilize on their own future music releases whether it's a single, an EP, or even a full-length studio album.

Who gets to own the project?

Regarding ownership, i.e., the person or corporate body (e.g., a record label) that will have exclusive rights of the sound recording copyright ℗ (also known as a master) of a riddim generally depends on the initial verbal agreement that was made and put into a written contract agreement.

It is possible for various recording artists to individually return both the music publishing rights © and the sound recording copyright ℗ for each of their own songs even though they appear on the same riddim.

However, in most cases, Zimdancehall record producers tend to be greedy and ruthless toward upcoming artists because the reality is new musicians won't have enough leverage to negotiate a favorable deal, unlike already established artists.
