Some hardware and plug-in dynamic processors (i.e., audio compressors and brickwall limiters) have a function that allows you to activate "auto-release" (or auto-recovery) which in turn adjusts the release time automatically with the input signal instead of a fixed setting e.g. 100 milliseconds.

How this works in most cases is to have the release time shortened during transient peaks and the release time prolonged when there is heavy gain reduction going on mostly due to sustained sounds (e.g., subs, bass, and drones or synths pads).

However, the use of automatic release may not be ideal in some scenarios because the recovery speed may be subjectively slower than what the user wants and thus messing up the groove of the music. It's a matter of taste really. Hence, to each his own.
