For the most part, there's no difference between audio software plug-ins referred to as maximizers and those marketed as brickwall mastering plug-ins. The contrast is that some developers simply decide to name their digital audio processors as maximizers whilst some may settle for the term brickwall mastering limiter, but the purpose remains the same i.e., dynamic range reduction (albeit the techniques and processing quality are always different).

At the end of the day, maximize/limiters are meant to achieve the desired perceived level of loudness and most importantly to stop audio peaks from hard clipping i.e., to exceed 0 dBFS. In summary, there are many different maximizers or brickwall limiters out there and the onus is on you to decide which one sounds best for your needs.
