Political groups rushed to sign up for the upcoming election as the deadline arrived today. Election officials counted 147 parties that want to compete for seats during the 13th National Parliament voting. The Election Commission started accepting applications back during March when they first opened the process. Many groups missed the first cutoff date during April after only 65 parties had applied. Officials decided to give everyone more time and pushed the final day to June 22. Several major political organizations handed over their paperwork at the last minute today. The National Citizen Party arrived at the Election Commission building with their completed forms. Bangladesh Aam Janagan Party also submitted their application before time ran out. Janatar Party Bangladesh joined the rush of groups trying to become official parties. Each organization hopes election officials will approve their requests to participate. Party leaders spoke with reporters after turning over their documents at the government office. They believe their applications contain everything the Election Commission requires from new political groups. Nahid Islam from the National Citizen Party said his team carefully checked all the rules before applying. He feels confident that officials will accept their paperwork and approve their party status. The Election Commission will review each application and announce which groups can participate during the upcoming parliamentary elections.
