30 Killed in Stampede at India's Maha Kumbh Mela

30 Die in Stampede at India's Kumbh Mela Festival.

A stampede killed at least 30 people at a Hindu festival in India on Wednesday. 60 more were injured.

The Kumbh Mela is a massive gathering held every 12 years. Around 100 million devotees came to bathe in the confluence of three holy rivers.

The deadly crash happened between 1 and 2 a.m. Police said the crowd surged, trampling waiting worshippers.

Officials have identified 25 of the deceased so far. They are working to name the remaining victims.

The festival takes place in Prayagraj, a city in Uttar Pradesh state. Hindus believe bathing in the sacred waters cleanses sins and brings salvation.

This year's Kumbh Mela began on January 14. It will end on March 4 after 49 days of prayers and rituals.

Deadly stampedes are sadly common at India's huge religious festivals. Authorities struggle to control the enormous crowds.

In 2019, 31 pilgrims died in a similar incident in Prayagraj. A stampede at the 2015 Kumbh claimed 27 lives in Nashik.

The government has expressed condolences to the victims' families and ordered a thorough investigation into the tragedy.
