The Social Health Authority says it does not owe money to small hospitals in rural areas. The Authority wrote a message saying the claims about owing 30 billion shillings are not true. They asked hospital groups to keep working with them to help sick people.
Many sick people could not see doctors because more than 600 hospitals stopped helping patients. These hospitals said they stopped because no one paid them the money they earned.
On February 20, 2025, the group representing these hospitals said they would stop seeing patients. They said the healthcare system has big problems. Brian Lishenga leads this hospital group. He said the government ignored their problems, which put patients in danger.
The hospital group wants the government to pay all the money it says it is owed. It also wants changes to how it receives money for treating patients who do not stay overnight. The hospital group believes it needs fair pay when it treats police officers and teachers.
Mr. Lishenga said more than half of hospitals have not received any money from the Authority. He added that almost all hospitals face problems with the computer system. Many hospitals find it hard to check if patients qualify for care because the system breaks down often.
The Authority said they will teach hospital staff how to ask for payment correctly, which will help hospitals avoid waiting for money. The Authority also mentioned that hospitals learned how to view their payment information online.
The Health Ministry met with hospital leaders on February 24, 2025, to discuss ways to improve health care for everyone.
