Road accidents in Zimbabwe jumped during the 2025 Easter and Independence holidays compared to last year. Police records show 384 crashes happened this season, up from 286 in 2024. Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi released these numbers on April 22.

Despite more accidents overall, fewer people died on the roads this year. Officials counted 21 fatal crashes with 24 deaths, down from 26 fatal accidents and 27 deaths last year. The injury count rose to 178 from 159 during the same period in 2024.

One major accident happened on April 21 on the Harare-Bulawayo road when a Toyota Hiace minibus carrying 18 passengers flipped over. Three people died at the scene, and another died at Norton Hospital. Fourteen others suffered injuries in this single crash.

Police also reported three hit-and-run fatal accidents in Murewa and Harare. The first occurred on April 19 on the Mutoko-Chidye road when a motorcyclist struck a pedestrian and fled. The victim later died at Mutoko Hospital. Another person died instantly when hit by an unknown vehicle at the Tynwald flyover on April 20.

That same day, a 66-year-old man was hit near the Puma service station in Whitehouse by a Nissan Caravan that left the scene. The man died after being taken to Parirenyatwa Group Hospital.
