Kenya Sends 900 Construction Workers to UAE in Major Jobs Initiative.
More than 900 skilled workers from Kericho County, Kenya, have secured construction jobs in the United Arab Emirates through a recent government recruitment program.
The two-day hiring event took place at Kericho Township Technical and Vocational College. Four licensed recruitment agencies conducted interviews: Blue Wave International Services Limited, Raytoria, Al Suwedi International Recruitment Agency Limited, and Loivin Recruitment.
Principal Shadrack Tonui reported that over 1,200 candidates applied for positions. The jobs span various trades, including carpentry, masonry, electrical engineering, plumbing, and steel fixing. The agencies tested both practical skills and conducted oral interviews.
Successful candidates aged 22 to 45 will work across six UAE emirates. Their two-year renewable contracts offer monthly salaries between 900 and 3,000 Arab Emirates Dirhams (Sh35,000 to Sh105,000).
"The employment agencies from Abu Dhabi maintained strict standards during practical tests," Tonui said. "Many qualified candidates already had hands-on experience in their trades."
The program helps address youth unemployment in Kenya. Kericho county deputy speaker Eric Bett praised the initiative, noting it would bring foreign income through worker remittances.
KERITTVC Board Chairman Reuben Langat highlighted that technical training centers prepare students for growing job markets in developing nations. He announced that the youth enterprise fund would help candidates who need assistance with airfare costs.
One successful applicant, Kiptoo Ngeno, 28, shared his path to securing a carpentry position in Dubai. After completing high school in 2014, he pursued technical training instead of university due to financial constraints. He later opened his carpentry shop before landing this UAE opportunity.
The recruitment aligns with Labor Minister Alfred Mutua's 2024 announcement targeting 10,000 Kenyan workers for UAE construction jobs in 2025.
Candidates must meet medical requirements and provide professional certificates, criminal clearance documents, and valid passports before deployment.
