Three people walked free from an Accra court after a major university scam fell apart. Joseph Appiah and Stephen Nimako Ansong, both students at the University of Ghana, had teamed up with lecturer Dr. Kwadwo Owusu Ayeh for the scheme. They promised desperate students rooms and beds at the popular Dr. Hilla Liman Hall. The trio collected over 106,000 cedis from 32 victims who never got their promised accommodation. Judge Isaac Addo threw out the case after the university decided to drop all charges. The whole mess started when students complained to university bosses about the fake room deals. Police jumped into action and found that Appiah and Ansong had charged each victim between 2,000 and 2,500 cedis. Dr. Ayeh, a senior hall tutor, had helped the students find targets who needed places to stay on campus. The lecturer used his position to make the scam look real and trustworthy. All three suspects had denied the charges and were out on bail worth 100,000 cedis each. Everything changed when the accused finally paid back all the stolen money to police. The court ordered officers to return every cedi to the 32 students who got tricked. University officials decided they did not want to continue the criminal case against the three suspects. The refund and the university backing down meant the court had to end the prosecution completely.
