Accra - Alexander Afenyo-Markin has clarified his Freemasonry ties. The Minority Leader says the group is not anti-Christian or occultic.

Afenyo-Markin told JoyNews that many people misunderstand Freemasonry. "It is not a secret society. It is not an antichrist organization," he stated.

The lawmaker said last week that he is a Freemason. He emphasized that the group promotes moral values. It does not engage in sinister practices.

"Those things you see on TV—rituals involving blood, mysterious practices—that's not Freemasonry," he said. "At the Perfection stage of Masonry, you must profess Christ."

Afenyo-Markin said Freemasonry is like other Christian fraternal groups. He believes religious leaders will understand this if they talk with him.

The Minority Leader showed a book called "Rose Croix." He said it proves the group's Christian roots. "Everything in this book is about Christ," he stated.

Afenyo-Markin said Freemasonry does not go against Christianity. It encourages members to live by high moral and ethical standards.
