Air ambulance lifts off with over 1,100 rescues and wild stories

Turns out those government-funded choppers are actually doing stuff, having zoomed past a huge number of emergency calls. The air ambulance service, a joint operation with Russia's HeliDrive, has logged over 1,170 flight cases across Zimbabwe. Medical director Dr. Freddy Mhondiwa noted its rapid growth, with hubs in Harare and Bulawayo handling hundreds of interventions.

The fleet of six helicopters aims to reach remote areas and accident victims, providing ICU-level care around the clock. Russian and Zimbabwean medical staff work together on these flights. Hospitals in many towns, from Musami to Victoria Falls, have received patients through this system.

One dramatic mission involved delivering a baby mid-flight while transporting a young mother. Another call airlifted a young girl with extensive burns from Masvingo to a central hospital. A man injured in a motorcycle accident was also evacuated from West Nicholson.

The service focuses on overcoming distance barriers, offering specialized care previously hard to access. This push is part of a broader goal for wider health coverage. The program represents a significant shift in emergency medical infrastructure for the country.
