Vice President Jessica Alupo got an honorary doctorate from the Islamic University in Uganda. The school gave it to her at their main campus in Mbale during a graduation event. University officials said it was for her leadership, her time in the military, and her work in education, especially for girls.

Nusura Tiperu, who is Uganda’s ambassador to Turkey and also works with the university, congratulated Alupo. Tiperu called the award fitting because of the VP’s support for schooling and for being a role model. The ceremony had a bunch of government bigwigs, diplomats, and religious figures in attendance. Over two thousand four hundred students graduated that day. More than half of them were women, which the university said shows progress for girls in higher education.

Alupo spoke to the new graduates at the event. She told them to use their degrees for more than just their own benefit. She said they should work to change their communities and the country for the better. The Islamic University in Uganda started back in 1988. It takes students from Uganda and other African countries, focusing on both academics and building ethical leaders.
