Apple Shakes Up Headset Game With Lighter Gear

Apple plans to launch two new headsets in its Vision Pro lineup. The company wants to make the main Vision Pro 2 lighter because users think the current model feels heavy on their faces. It weighs between 600 and 650 grams right now. Engineers are testing lighter materials and a more comfortable face seal to bring the weight closer to competitors like Meta Quest 3, which weighs 515 grams.

The Vision Pro 2 will feature the upcoming M5 chip for better performance and longer battery life. Apple hopes to lower the price from its current $3,499 starting point. Making this happen might prove difficult since the headset comes entirely from Chinese factories where supply chains face growing pressure.

The company is also working on a second version that connects directly to Mac computers with a cable. This wired connection would provide the reliable performance needed by professionals in medicine and aviation. The current Vision Pro can mirror Mac screens through wireless connections but cannot maintain the stability some jobs require.

Apple still dreams of creating true augmented reality glasses with see-through lenses. CEO Tim Cook considers this technology essential for the company's future in spatial computing. The main challenges involve making the optical components smaller and improving how light passes through the lenses.
