ASUS just showed us its best Socket AM5 motherboard yet—the ROG Crosshair X870E Extreme. Until recently, ASUS offered the ROG Crosshair X870E Hero for great connections and the ROG Crosshair X870E Apex for serious overclocking. They decided to make something even better when AMD's Ryzen 9000X3D chips became the fastest gaming processors around. This board goes head-to-head with top models from other brands like the MSI MEG X870E Godlike and GIGABYTE X870E AORUS Xtreme. The board uses the bigger E-ATX size format. It needs lots of power through a 24-pin ATX connector, two 8-pin EPS connectors, and an 8-pin PCIe power plug. ASUS packed its strongest CPU power system ever for AMD platforms into this board—even stronger than the 22-phase setup found in the Hero model. You'll find plenty of fan and water pump headers all over the board. For storage options, the board includes one super-fast M.2-22110 Gen 5 slot with a big cooling system, another Gen 5 slot, two Gen 4 slots right on the board, plus extra slots on a DIMM.2 add-on module. The main PCIe slot runs at version 5.0 speeds, with a second slot running at PCIe 4.0 speeds. The back panel comes loaded with USB ports, including some blazing fast 40 Gbps USB4 ports, 20 Gbps USB 3.2 ports, and several 10 Gbps and 5 Gbps connections. Network connections include cutting-edge Wi-Fi 7, ultra-fast 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and regular 5 Gigabit Ethernet. Audio quality reaches audiophile levels thanks to a Realtek ALC4082 chip paired with an ESS ES9219 DAC, high-end amplifier, and premium capacitors. Serious overclockers will love the special features borrowed from their Intel-based Maximus Extreme boards. The coolest feature might be the 4-inch color screen above the power section that can display almost anything you want. ASUS hasn't shared when you can buy it or how much it will cost.
