Atwoli's Surprising Ties To Ruto Spark Worker Fury

Francis Atwoli Defends Close Ties with Government.

NAIROBI, Kenya - Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (Cotu), says his close engagement with the government is part of his job. He wants to address issues that affect workers.

In a statement, Atwoli said many concerns have been resolved through talks with various groups, including the government. "Cotu works to advance the rights and welfare of workers," he said. "This is done through social dialogue, which is a key part of how the International Labour Organisation operates."

Atwoli also disputed reports that his close working relationship with the government is about political survival. He had supported the Azimio la Umoja coalition in the last general election. "Social dialogue means engaging with the current government to ensure that labor issues are addressed," Atwoli said. "This is not about politics but a practical approach to secure workers' interests."

Atwoli pointed to Cotu's achievements as proof of their commitment. These include negotiating better wages, promoting workers' rights, and influencing labor policies.

Some critics have accused Atwoli of betraying workers due to his ties with the government. Atwoli has denied these accusations. He has also spoken out against President Ruto's critics and shown support for the government's policies and programs.

The recent focus on Atwoli's relationship with Ruto comes after the President visited Atwoli's rural home in Khwisero, Kakamega County, last week. Ruto was accompanied by other senior government officials and was welcomed by Atwoli and his family.

Atwoli posted on social media that the visit followed the President's "successful and impactful" development tour of Western Kenya. "Thank you, your Excellency, for visiting and sharing a meal with us," he said. Ruto's visit to Atwoli's home was part of his four-day development tour of the Western region.
