Journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni wants the Youth Employment Agency to cut ties with waste company Zoomlion. He believes local governments can handle street cleaning without help from outside companies. He says workers should answer directly to town officials and receive their full pay.
YEA head Malik Basintale promised earlier he would change the current deal that pays sweepers just GH¢250 from a GH¢850 allocation. Azure argues the contract ended last September, making talk about renewal pointless. He pushed for the complete removal of Zoomlion's role as a middleman between workers and local assemblies.
Azure noted that many towns already employ their sweepers because they lack control over Zoomlion staff. He claimed corruption thrives under the present system and pointed Basintale toward page 131 of a government report from 2013 that supports his findings.
The journalist raised concerns about numerous questionable deals involving Zoomlion. He offered his support to Basintale but insisted on ending the arrangement completely. He believes giving workers the entire GH¢850 payment would still fall short in the current economy.
