The first witness testified Monday against six people charged with trying to kill Transport Minister Edward Katumba Wamala and murdering his daughter and driver. Nawalu Nakatudde, 30, spoke before four judges about surviving a related shooting at Denovo Bakery where she worked. Three court assessors were sworn in to give non-binding opinions after the trial ends.

Nakatudde told the court she was working late on September 17, 2017, counting cash after closing, when someone dressed in black shot her in the hand and thigh. She tied her bleeding hand with a scarf but couldn't escape through the back door because of security bars. After the shooting stopped, she found police officer Mubiru dead outside and later saw the body of driver Haruna Kayondo at the hospital.

She didn't recognize any defendants in court. Defense lawyers pointed out differences between her testimony and the police statement. Nakatudde said trauma and pain affected her first account. The defendants face charges of terrorism, murder, attempted murder, robbery, and belonging to a terrorist group for attacks across Uganda and Congo.

Prosecutors linked weapons and ammunition found at the defendants' homes to these crimes. The second witness will testify after a break.
