The Bulawayo City Council needs money that people owe them. They turned off water at 59 schools because these schools hadn't paid their bills. This means about three out of ten schools in Bulawayo lost their water supply. The council has many people who owe them money. By September 2024, people owed them ZiG712.6 million. This number keeps growing bigger each month. The council tried to get back US$17.5 million, but they only got US$4 million. The council also cut water to 461 homes in Nkulumane. They hoped these homes would pay US$134,891, but they only got a tiny bit back - just US$2,848. They tried talking to businesses too. They called and emailed 873 companies that owed them US$4.8 million. This worked better - they got US$3.3 million back. Regular people who live in Bulawayo owe the most money. They need to pay US$19.4 million. Business places owe US$7.3 million. The government needs to pay US$1.8 million too. The council sent warning letters to many people. They told them they must pay what they owe. Some areas got more warnings than others. Places like Pumula had lots of warnings - 4,989 homes got letters. Other areas like Pelandaba only had 20 homes that got warnings. The council keeps trying different ways to get their money back. They make phone calls, send letters, and give people notice before they cut off services. They want people to pay their bills because they need this money to keep the city running well.
