Benue Governor Says Do Not Take Law Into Your Hands

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia asked people facing attacks not to take matters into their hands. He spoke with reporters after attending Good Friday Mass at Holy Ghost Parish in Makurdi. The governor confirmed five deaths in the Ukum Local Government Area following recent violence. Police reported that suspected herdsmen killed seventeen people in total across the Sankera region.

Alia promised residents that his administration would work with the National Security Adviser to create plans for stopping these deadly attacks. The former Catholic priest urged everyone to stay alert but let security agencies handle the situation. He mentioned that quick action in Ukum happened because people shared information early, which prevented more killings.

Police spokesperson Sewuese Anene released a statement about the attacks. She explained officers responded after learning armed militia groups invaded the Sankera area. Police confronted attackers in Gbagir, where five people had been killed. During this response, another group of attackers hit the nearby Logo Local Government Area. This second attack resulted in twelve more deaths, making seventeen casualties altogether.
