Three officials ended up hurt after fighting erupted between opposing groups at the assembly Tuesday. Some people supported Speaker Ann Kiusya staying in power, while others pushed hard for her removal. Majority Whip Lucky Nzau suffered the worst injuries as blood poured from his wounds before helpers rushed him to doctors. Both Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka and Deputy Speaker Stephen Mwanthi escaped with smaller cuts and bruises. Guards moved quickly during the chaos to protect Speaker Kiusya by taking her next door and locking her safely inside. Many officers arrived at the assembly because they knew tensions might explode between the groups. The upset members refused to listen when security tried to calm things down and restore order. These new problems started because certain members prepared fresh papers to try removing Kiusya from her position. Their previous attempt failed several weeks ago when courts blocked their actions with legal orders. Every part of the assembly grounds felt tense as police wearing protective gear patrolled around looking for trouble spots. Members wanting Kiusya gone kept singing protest songs loudly throughout the building all day long. Their constant noise and activities made regular office work completely impossible for everyone else. They promised repeatedly they would keep fighting until they finally succeeded in pushing her out of power. When reporters left the scene, Kiusya remained under guard protection behind locked office doors. Her loyal supporters stated firmly that she would stay speaker and they would defend her position with everything possible.
