Brickfields traders get refunds after tent fiasco

Kuala Lumpur City Hall will refund deposits to traders who experienced delayed operations at the Brickfields Deepavali Bazaar, and Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said officials replaced inadequate tents with sturdier structures to protect vendors and customers. Ramanan clarified that his ministry became involved only after problems emerged, while DBKL and Bank Rakyat manage the annual event. He addressed criticism about the tent quality after several structures collapsed during heavy rain, and he invited skeptics to inspect the new marquee installations.

Traders paid RM2,500 for temporary business space before the Festival of Lights celebration on Oct. 20, with fees split between a RM2,000 deposit and service charges. MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan previously criticized the original tents as flimsy and unsuitable for the high-traffic area. Authorities plan to announce additional support measures, such as free shuttle services and designated parking zones, to improve visitor access and traffic management in Little India.
