A fake doctor from Bulawayo received seven years behind bars for tricking sick people at Mpilo Central Hospital. Taurai Prosper Vanhuvaone pretended to be a real doctor and cheated patients out of money. The 29-year-old man used the false name Prosper Mpofu during his crimes. Court officials found him guilty of fraud and pretending to be a medical worker. He also wrote fake medicine orders for patients. The judge said Vanhuvaone could serve only half his sentence if he pays back his victims. He must return the stolen money before July 30 to qualify for early release. Vanhuvaone stole $1,600 from a nursing student who wanted help finding work at the hospital. He promised to help her find a job but never delivered on his word. The student never got her money back or the job she was promised. Hospital doctors became suspicious when they saw his strange medicine orders. Vanhuvaone wrote prescriptions that told patients to eat apples and grapes as treatment. Real doctors knew these instructions made no sense for sick patients. The fake prescriptions helped expose his illegal activities at the medical center. Hospital staff reported him to police after discovering the fraudulent documents. This was not his first time breaking the law or lying about being a doctor. Two years earlier he faced assault charges and claimed to be a medical student. Court records show he used the same fake identity during that previous case. His actions put patients at risk and damaged the hospital's reputation.
