A lawyer from Bulawayo faces court trouble after he took his client's money. The 36-year-old Martin Chirwa grabbed over $15,000 meant for Mr. Denford Gwizi. This cash came from divorce papers when Mr. Gwizi split from his wife. The money represented half the value of their house in Emganwini. Chirwa picked up these funds from another law firm on four separate occasions. The total reached $16,400 by the end. His client never saw a penny of it. Ms. Isabel Mpala had paid fair and square for her ex-husband's share of their home. The court put Chirwa behind bars until April 8. The case dates back to November 2021, when Mr. Gwizi brought Chirwa as his lawyer to a divorce meeting. They met at Sansole and Senda Law Chambers, where everyone agreed on how to split everything fairly. Their house cost $30,000, and each person deserved half that amount. Ms. Mpala agreed to pay Mr. Gwizi $15,000 for his portion. The plan said Mr. Gwizi must leave the house three months after full payment. He trusted Chirwa to collect all the money from his ex-wife's lawyers. In January 2022, Ms. Mpala handed $10,000 cash to her lawyer. This money went straight to Chirwa, who signed papers saying he received it. He never passed this money to Mr. Gwizi but spent it himself instead. The following month, Ms. Mpala paid another $2,000 toward the house. Chirwa snatched this cash and signed more papers. Later that same day, she added $1,200 more. Chirwa rushed back and grabbed that money, too. He kept all $3,200 for himself. By March 2022, Chirwa collected the final payment - $1,100 plus 1,500 South African Rand. Again, he pocketed everything. The scheme fell apart when Ms. Mpala asked her lawyers to kick Mr. Gwizi out of the house after three months had passed. Mr. Gwizi learned about the payments after losing his home. When he asked Chirwa what happened, the lawyer claimed he never received any money from anyone. The truth came out during the investigation, showing Chirwa had taken every cent.
