Bulawayo will rename a significant thoroughfare after Joaquim Chissano, the former Mozambican president who led his nation from 1986 until 2005. The renaming would mark the first time Bulawayo has honored a former African head of state with a street designation. He later chaired both the Southern African Development Community and the African Union before his retirement.

The former statesman continues working as a high-level facilitator for Zimbabwe's debt resolution initiatives and received recognition at the Liberation Movements Summit in Johannesburg for his continental contributions.
