Police caught a suspected drug dealer in Bulawayo yesterday with almost 2 kilograms of crystal meth valued at $7,000 on the street. At the same time, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority officials stopped 163 kilograms of marijuana worth $32,600 at Beitbridge Border Post on Sunday. These seizures happened as communities faced rising drug abuse problems connected to more violent crimes, including robberies and deadly fights. The Zimbabwe government has stepped up efforts against drug smuggling and sales across the country. Commissioner Paul Nyathi, speaking for the national police, confirmed they arrested 39-year-old Pigors Tyron Siegfried from Matsheumhlope neighborhood for having Crystal Meth illegally. The police had kept an eye on Siegfried since February before they finally moved to arrest him yesterday. Detectives stormed Siegfried's home based on information they had gathered since February. They found drugs hidden inside a Lobel's biscuit box, a Puma sneaker box, a dictionary-shaped safe, and a big blue metal trunk located in his bedroom. Commissioner Nyathi mentioned that officers also grabbed two small measuring scales used for packaging the drugs during the raid. "The police acted because of tips about the suspect selling drugs. They surprised him at his house and discovered the drugs in his bedroom. Tests showed the stuff was definitely crystal meth," Commissioner Nyathi explained. He added that police are currently tracking down where Siegfried got his supply and anyone else who might have helped him sell these illegal substances. Ms. Regina Chinamasa, the Commissioner General for Zimra, released a statement saying they caught a South African truck driver trying to smuggle marijuana into the country on Sunday. Officials found the drugs during a regular check at 4 AM, stuffed under blankets and plastic wrapping inside a South African Hino Horse truck carrying vehicles headed to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ms. Chinamasa noted that customs officials used K9 units to locate the hidden drugs. She confirmed police are investigating the case further. "Illegal drug trafficking seriously threatens our society. Zimra remains committed to protecting our borders against drugs and banned substances," Ms. Chinamasa stated.
