No, it's counterintuitive for record labels to take the position of embracing artificial intelligence. Because even though record labels may see a potential upside in AI, musicians and bands will certainly balk at the idea; many musicians fear that embracing artificial intelligence could make it easier for record labels to produce and distribute music without the need for an artist. It could also lead to an overall decrease in the quality of music, as AI can struggle to capture the nuances of human-produced music.

As long as there are people who value the emotional depth and authenticity that only a human touch can bring, there will always be a need for songwriters. And as long as we continue to nurture and support the talents of those in the creative arts, we can ensure that the future of music is as vibrant and diverse as it's always been.

Genres of music with low-effort lyrics are going to be first on the chopping block. I don't think it can easily replace something like hip-hop rappers. OpenAI ChatGPT can't chase clout, start beef, self-snitch, or use expletives. Drama is part of rap music too. The culture feeds on negativity a lot these days.

Lyrics are the easy part to mass produce, but in songwriting (or toplining) the vocal melody is also very important. This is an area that OpenAI ChatGPT can't do at the moment. I am sure some audio software companies are going to try to make products that can generate both lyrics and perhaps use speech synthesis as virtual artists with the goal of rendering a vocal melody so that you can have a rough idea of how you should sing the song. Just like how it's done traditionally without all these artificial intelligence deep learning models.

When I took it for a spin I noticed that OpenAI ChatGPT can be useful for songwriters who are experiencing writer's block. It can generate new ideas for lyrics providing you with a spark of creativity or coming up with exciting ideas you would not have otherwise considered. It is by no means a perfect tool. I think too many people are expecting perfection from it yet, it's still in its early stages. It's not a matured product.

Yep, it has enough potential to speed up the workload of topliners or other people like authors, journalists, YouTubers who need to scribble the description box with something and etc. Another thing is it definitely requires you to edit the output you get because it has an arrogant habit of thinking it is always right. Imagine giving something like that authoritative power in society.

Isn't artificial intelligence in the music industry a dream come true for many record label owners? They get to keep both the music publishing and sound recording copyright without any need of being shady about it. All they need is a staff that is good at prompting commands for them to churn out whatever they need e.g., the album artwork, the instrumental, the lyrics, mixing, and mastering. That's a lot of cost saving indeed. Many creative people are gonna be on the dole if the music business moves in that direction.

Won't there be copyright issues in years to come if, for example, someone were to prompt an AI to generate lyrics in the style of Taylor Swift or Beyonce?

I get what you are saying. What you are talking about is also an ongoing issue about artists who aren't happy with the way AI can produce for instance a beautiful digital art painting in the style of an artist you want it to.

Some of the images look so good to the point that you can't tell which one was done by a human. Of course, the tricky part is how are companies going to teach AI to understand hit songs without getting lawsuits if they start making claims that their tool can make music like X artist.

It's the major record labels that need to find ways to stop tech companies from disrupting the music industry. Unfortunately, there is nothing songwriters can do. One day someone is gonna try to hoard a lot of melodies algorithmically and attempt to copyright them when AI music becomes a trendy thing like OpenAI ChatGPT.

All creative people learn through repeated observation of existing works and will re-use elements of the things they've seen or heard when creating their own unique tastes. AI algorithms do the same thing.

I agree, but people will probably be gatekeeping art for the rest of humanity. The issue at hand is rooted in capitalism.

You can't protect a style of writing or a style of art. If it were possible many artists wouldn't exist. There would be no clout-chasing whatsoever.
