The Uganda Police detective showed videos in court yesterday that captured Henry Katanga's last hours alive at his home. Detective Enock Kanene played the footage for Judge Rosette Kania Comfort. These videos came from security cameras at Katanga's large house in Mbuya. The recordings show Katanga driving up to his house around 8 p.m. on November 1, 2023. He parked his white Toyota Prado Land Cruiser before walking through the kitchen entrance. He wore blue pants and a white shirt with short sleeves. The detective told the court someone turned off all cameras at 7:14 a.m. the next morning. When cameras started recording again at 8:48 a.m., house workers looked scared and rushed around. Camera footage shows the family gardener, George Amanyiire, carrying a brand-new small mattress from his quarters to the main bedroom. Katanga's body lay in this bedroom. Later, Amanyiire threw away a bloody shirt and changed into fresh clothes. The videos also caught Charles Otai, a nurse, arriving by motorcycle taxi. He made phone calls to Patricia Kakwanzi, who was Katanga's daughter. Patricia faces charges for hiding evidence about her dad's murder. Amanyiire and Otai stand accused as helpers who messed with crime scene evidence. Martha Nkwazi, another daughter, faces similar charges. The main suspect, Molly Bunanukye Katanga, allegedly shot her husband. Police officer Peter Ogwang arrived first at the scene, followed by other officers and regular people. Before many people showed up, workers from A-Plus Funeral Services took away Katanga's body. Inside the house, the cook and family members like Denise Nayebare kept busy. Some cleaned blood from floors. Others acted normal as if nothing bad had happened. Detective Kanene described how the accused called each other many times that day. Martha called Patricia 66 times. Patricia called Martha back 46 times. Denise talked with Martha. Patricia spoke with Otai. Amanyiire called everyone else accused in the case. The court granted bail to everyone except Molly Katanga. She remains behind bars after more than 12 months. Her husband died from a gunshot to his head on November 2, 2023, at their home on Mbuya Chwa II Road. Government lawyers Samalie Wakooli, Jonathan Muwaganya, and Annah Kiiza lead the case against the accused. Former government attorney Mwesigwa Rukutana represents the dead businessman along with lawyers Edgar Ayebazibwe and Brian Rubaihayo. Defenders Peter Kabatsi, Macdusman Kabega, Elison Karuhanga, and John Jet Tumwebaze fight for Molly Katanga and those accused with her.
