Serekunda lawmaker Musa Cham fired back at Lands Minister Hamat Bah about car parks and garages popping up everywhere. Cham said the government should take the blame for this mess, not local councils. Minister Bah had criticized local officials when talking to Muslim leaders during their Eid visit to State House. He claimed councils failed to handle the growing number of these spots. Cham thanked the minister for answering his question from parliament but noted he used the wrong place to do it. He mentioned they are still waiting for the government to clear the roads properly. He agreed with some of the minister's points as real problems facing their communities. Cham pointed out how officials just collect money from these places without fixing anything. According to Cham, every street corner has turned into either a garage or a car park. Street sellers pay fees daily to local councils yet crowd the roads. The central government takes parking fees and road taxes but never uses that money to improve things. Cham called this practice against the law and said it makes their society unsafe and disorganized. Cham mentioned waking up to news about a fire at Sandika near the Serekunda Health Center. He stressed how often he brings up this area when speaking in the National Assembly. Serekunda needs major changes as it grows into a business hub for The Gambia. Without good roads and buildings for trade and jobs, Cham believes the area cannot reach its full potential as a commercial center.
