Chief Chimombe demands beer for dad, toilets for cops

Residents of Chief Chimombe's area in Gutu face mandatory contributions for the late chief's memorial service and tombstone unveiling alongside levies for toilet construction at Bhasera Police Camp. The combined financial demands have angered community members struggling with basic household expenses in a difficult economic climate. Each village must pay $12, with $5 designated for the memorial ceremony, plus a six-pack of Chibuku Super beer and additional funds for police station toilets.

Village heads reported that residents view the contributions as compulsory despite official claims of voluntary participation. One village leader stated that families cannot afford the mounting fees for council taxes, clinic services, and school development on top of new levies. Critics noted the chief previously faced removal over misuse allegations and questions about unfinished community projects. Masvingo Permanent Secretary Addmore Pazvakavambwa said he would investigate before commenting on the matter.
