CleanYourTV is taking on smart TV ads, and its free code has racked up over 37,000 GitHub stars. Developer Gathin, also known as @gathint, built the tool after his parents had to deal with ads on their Xiaomi TV just to get Netflix running. It all began as a small test. With Anthropic's Claude Code, Gathin used a Wi-Fi link to turn off 25 Xiaomi system packages. He then made a plain new home menu with an Apple TV-style look. No more clutter on the main screen. And the internet went nuts. Millions saw his post on X, while hundreds of people joined the effort to make the app better. What began as one guy fixing a family TV has grown into a full open-source project, with version 3.0 already out. The latest release has a fair bit packed in. CleanYourTV 3.0 has profiles for 300 models from 86 TV brands. There are 28 language options and 20 extra add-ons as well. That's quite a jump for a project that got its start with one Xiaomi set. For smart home fans, Home Assistant can put light settings, room heat controls, and door lock details right on the TV. Users can also work with Pi-hole or AdGuard Home to manage DNS ad filters from their couch. Pretty handy. Remote controls get some love as well. Buttons can be set to open apps or run quick tasks, while the home menu has fresh themes, layouts, and wall art. An Android phone app made by the community can even handle setup on supported TVs, with no PC needed. Under the hood, Android Debug Bridge, or ADB, does much of the work. Once a user turns on debug mode, the tool can reach the TV via Wi-Fi. It saves the old setup, runs the pm disable-user command on selected apps, and sets up a lean home launcher. Better yet, there's no need to root the device. The tool leaves the blocked packages in place rather than wiping them for good. That means users can bring back their old setup with the recovery feature if they want to undo the changes. Device support has some limits, though. Sony, TCL, Xiaomi, Hisense, Philips, and NVIDIA Shield are among the Android TV and Google TV options. Amazon Fire TV gets partial support, but Samsung Tizen and LG webOS can't use the normal install method. Of course, messing with system apps carries some risk. Turn off the wrong one, and a TV may lose a feature it needs to work. Users should check the model guide and save a backup first. Also, ads in Netflix or other streaming apps may still appear. Still, the whole thing is quite a neat use of AI coding tools. A basic fix for an ad-heavy TV has drawn a large group of people who want more say over their devices. Anyone keen to try it can find the free code, setup guide, and device list on GitHub and the CleanYourTV site.
