Clelin Ferrell faces his old team after the Commanders cut him

The Los Angeles Chargers elevated edge rusher Clelin Ferrell from the practice squad to the active roster before their Week 5 game against the Washington Commanders on Sunday. The move addresses defensive depth concerns after star linebacker Khalil Mack suffered an injury that will keep him out of the contest.

Ferrell spent the 2024 season with Washington, where he recorded 3.5 sacks across 14 games before the team released him after final roster cuts in September. The Chargers signed the former fourth overall pick from the 2019 draft on Sept. 18, and he faces his former team for the first time since his departure.

The defensive lineman could compete for playing time in a rotation that features Tuli Tuipulotu and Bud Dupree, and he might displace Caleb Murphy or rookie Kyle Kennard. A strong performance against the Commanders could earn Ferrell a permanent spot on the 53-man roster for the remainder of the season.
