Using Mazoe's phone, Chishumba started communicating with various individuals, requesting money and promising to give them cash in United States dollars. Mazoe becomes aware of the situation when people approach her, demanding their money. She blocked the number with her service provider and reported the case to the police. When Chishumba was arrested over the weekend, he was found possessing Mazoe's phone.

Chishumba also duped Faustina Makuwa, Mazoe's workmate, by messaging her on September 24 and asking for the Zimbabwean dollar equivalent of US$550. Makuwa sent the money, but Chishumba became evasive soon after. Using the same modus operandi, he duped Noreen Mutaramutswa of ZWG$6700 after promising to give her the equivalent in US dollars.
