A court in Lilongwe cleared Paramount Holdings Limited of all criminal charges. The Chief Resident Magistrate also freed three company directors from wrongdoing accusations. Prakash Virji Ghedia, Arvindkumar Atit Patel, and Suresh Khimji Jagatiya faced conspiracy and document forgery claims. The court blocked the state from bringing future charges against them on the same matter. Officials ruled the defendants innocent after reviewing the evidence. The legal trouble began when business rival Hendrix Laher filed a complaint in 2021. Laher claimed Paramount used a fake Yamaha dealership certificate to win a motorcycle supply contract. His company Luthando Holdings had competed for the same government tender from JHPIEGO. Paramount won the contract on July 7, 2020 to supply motorcycles to education and health ministries. The deal also covered Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. The case fell apart when Laher stopped appearing in court hearings. Prosecutors could not present strong evidence against Paramount Holdings. The Director of Public Prosecutions ended the case through an official certificate on March 19, 2024. After waiting six months as required under law, the court made its final ruling. The decision allows Paramount to continue seeking government contracts without legal problems. Yamaha Motor Corporation Japan confirmed Paramount as its only authorized dealer in Malawi during 2022. The company lawyers celebrated the court victory as fair justice. A separate civil lawsuit challenges the exclusive dealership agreement between Yamaha and Paramount.
