American sprinter Noah Lyles stunned defending Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo during their showdown at the Monaco Diamond League meeting. The Botswana speedster had previously crushed Lyles at the Paris Olympics where the American finished third after racing with COVID. Tebogo entered the Monaco clash riding high from his world-leading 19.76 seconds performance at the Eugene Diamond League event on July 5. Lyles had avoided sprint competition since April when he last ran a 400m race. The 27-year-old American had stayed away from 200m racing for 338 days before returning to the track. Lyles powered through the finish line clocking 19.88 seconds while Tebogo settled for second place at 19.97 seconds. The victorious sprinter celebrated his return to health after missing significant racing time during the season. Lyles declared his satisfaction at proving he remains competitive against elite opposition. The 22-year-old Tebogo admitted disappointment with his Monaco performance but identified areas needing improvement. Both athletes delivered another thrilling chapter in their growing rivalry. Other standout performances included Swedish pole vaulter Armando Duplantis clearing 6.05 meters before failing at a world record attempt. Kenyan middle-distance runner Emmanuel Wanyonyi dominated the 800m with a world-leading 1 minute 41.44 seconds. Dutch hurdler Femke Bol blazed to victory in the 400m hurdles recording 51.95 seconds ahead of Americans Dalilah Muhammad and Anna Cockrell. Olympic sprint champion Julien Alfred from St Lucia controlled the women's 100m race winning in 10.79 seconds. The Diamond League circuit continues with the sold-out London Athletics Meet scheduled for July 19.
