Roads Minister Davis Chirchir shared his sadness with families who lost people in recent road crashes. He talked about the crash at Kimalany Bridge on the Kaplong-Kapkatet Road in Bomet. That accident happened between a Shangilia School Bus and a matatu heading to Kericho. Another crash at Mlima ya Sondu killed three school kids and one teacher when a Nissan hit a trailer. Many others ended up hurt badly.

During his hospital visit, he said we must stop letting careless drivers harm innocent Kenyans who just want to travel safely. The government has made new rules to fix these problems on our roads and make travel safer for everyone.
The new rules deal with drunk driving, car inspections, business vehicles, and school buses. Chirchir explained that the drunk-driving law was changed after courts threw out the old rules back in 2014. The updated law says anyone driving under the influence will pay up to Sh100,000 or face jail time up to two years, or both punishments together. Drivers caught drunk will also lose their license for a full year.
Chirchir signed these new rules last month, and they take effect immediately once published. The government plans to put 1,000 breath-testing machines on roads to catch drivers who drink and drive.
