Cuban delegates headed by National Assembly president Esteban Lazo Hernandez participated in several activities yesterday after meeting with President Mnangagwa at State House in Harare. The group visited Fidel Castro Square, located on the street named after him, to place a wreath honoring his lasting legacy. This tribute recognized the substantial support Cuba offered Zimbabwe during its fight for independence. The Zimbabwean Government named this location as a permanent symbol of the strong relationship between both nations. Senator Charles Tawengwa, Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution stated that this visit strengthened the deep connections between Zimbabwe and Cuba established during the liberation struggle. He mentioned how Cuba, under Castro, provided training, weapons, and resources to support Zimbabwe. The government renamed the former Charter Road Fidel Castro Road back in 2020 to honor that steadfast support and help future generations remember the friendship between these countries. The delegation also explored Liberation City and toured the Museum of African Liberation, where they examined historical artifacts and observed ongoing construction work. Mr. Hernandez performed a symbolic act by watering a Cuban tree planted near their national flag, representing the continuing friendship between nations. He gifted a picture book featuring Fidel Castro to the museum as a meaningful gesture of goodwill and solidarity between the countries. Ambassador Kwame Muzavazi, who leads the Institute of African Knowledge, presented the Cuban visitors with the Africa Fact Book during their tour. Fernando Gonzalez, Hero of the Republic of Cuba, spoke for the delegation and expressed strong backing for the museum project. He emphasized its importance not just for African nations but for Cuba as well, noting cultural connections to Africa. He hoped young people would visit to learn history and understand how different countries contributed to liberation efforts. The event included notable officials such as Zanu PF Secretary for International Relations Simbarashe Mumbengegwi and Deputy Commissar Webster Shamu.
