The Royal Malaysian Customs Department successfully intercepted four attempts to smuggle over 1,000 kg of cannabis, valued at RM98 million, in operations around the Klang Valley and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1.

KLIA Customs director Zulkifli Muhammad stated that the department’s Enforcement Division, in collaboration with other security agencies, including the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), led the operations. Five local men have been arrested in connection with the smuggling attempts under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The smuggling attempts aimed to ship cannabis overseas, particularly to Europe, using various methods, including disguising the drugs as commercial goods. In one case, a man was arrested at KLIA Terminal 1 on October 1 after 21.04 kg of cannabis was found in his luggage.

In another operation on September 27, authorities intercepted 21 packages of drugs weighing 220.32 kg in a courier truck at the KLIA export gate. Further raids in Shah Alam and Subang Jaya on September 29-30 led to the discovery of 464.58 kg of cannabis hidden in 52 boxes. In the final case on October 3, 294.35 kg of cannabis was seized at the KLIA Free Zone export gate.

In these cases, the syndicate concealed the drugs in boxes labeled as premium towel brands, sealing them in airtight plastic to evade detection. Four individuals, including truck drivers and logistics warehouse owners, have been detained for further investigation.
