Look the death penalty it's definitely necessary because there are convicts on the death row that deserve it.

It's supposed to discourage people from killing. In reality it doesn't work very well because way too many people don't care.

The idea behind capital punishment is to hopefully prevent further fatal crimes by invoking fear. The downside is one can be wrongfully accused and evidence may come out later after execution.
