The East African Community (EAC) is holding an online summit to discuss the growing crisis in eastern DR Congo.

Kenya's President William Ruto, the current EAC chair, called the meeting. Ruto is in Egypt on a two-day state visit.

The EAC has eight member countries:

Its headquarters are in Arusha, Tanzania. Somalia joined the EAC in November 2023. It became a full member in March 2024.

DR Congo's president will not attend the meeting about rebels attacking Goma city. Felix Tshisekedi did not give a reason for skipping the talks.

Ruto invited Tshisekedi and Rwanda's Paul Kagame. Rwanda is accused of supporting the M23 rebels who control much of Goma.

Kagame backed a ceasefire after speaking with US officials. The UN says there is strong evidence Rwanda is helping M23. Rwanda denies this.

Goma was calm on Wednesday, except for some gunfire. People left safe places to find food. It is running low after days of fighting.

Clashes have left hospitals full of injured people. Bodies are in the streets. Aid groups say warehouses of food and medicine were robbed.

Electricity, water, and internet are out in Goma. People in the capital, Kinshasa, are angry. They damaged and looted 10 foreign embassies. The protesters want global action to stop the rebel attack on Goma.
