Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu wants University of Ghana leaders to make the school compete worldwide. He spoke on Friday when he set up the new 19-member group that will run the university. The minister praised the school for ranking first in Ghana, first in West Africa, and fifth in sub-Saharan Africa. He promised that the government would respect academic freedom at public universities.

The minister told council members the Mahama administration plans to create a National Research Fund with 50 million Ghana cedis to start. Mr Iddrisu noted Ghana still struggles with basic reading and math skills that need improvement.

Mr Iddrisu asked student representative Maradona Adjei Yeboah to solve problems through talking rather than protests. He confirmed university staff can still work after retirement despite government limits elsewhere. Council chairperson Marietta Appiah-Oppong thanked President Mahama for trusting them with leadership roles. She promised to work with honesty and fairness at the university.
