First Female Commander Appointed at Zimbabwe Air Force Base. Air Commodore Ellen Chiweshe made history yesterday. She became the first female commander of Jason Ziyapapa Moyo Air Force Base near Chegutu, Zimbabwe. Her appointment shows President Mnangagwa's commitment to empowering women. He wants to place them in influential positions. Air Commodore Chiweshe is only the second female base commander in the Air Force of Zimbabwe since 1980. The first was Air Commodore Mildred Dengura, who led Manyame Air Force Base from 2015 to 2016. Air Commodore Chiweshe takes over from Air Commodore Nicholas Nyathi. He was the base's 12th commander. Air Marshal John Jacob Nzvede officiated the handover ceremony. He said the appointment supports gender equality in line with government policies. "The Air Force of Zimbabwe has implemented equal opportunities at recruitment and in the workplace," he said. "Women like Air Commodore Chiweshe have risen to decision-making positions." Air Marshal Nzvede asked the base community to support the new commander. He said military tasks require teamwork. He also warned officers against alcohol abuse and irresponsible gambling. These can compromise security and discipline. The outgoing commander, Air Commodore Nyathi, thanked the base for their support during his two-year tenure. Air Commodore Chiweshe said she will work hard to fulfill her duties. She knows the position requires teamwork. Her appointment has inspired other female officers. They see it as a sign that women can earn influential positions through merit. Warrant Officer Memory Chivhinge said the appointment shows that women are capable leaders. Warrant Officer Esma Madzima said it makes women feel honored and respected.
