You can narrow the low end before it starts pushing dynamics and color stages around, rather than asking later processors to cope with information you already intend to remove. The final elliptical filter may remove the bass afterward, but it cannot undo gain reduction that already happened upstream. Saturation creates a different kind of residue. If a low-frequency Side component drives an odd-harmonic saturator, the processor can create new energy at integer multiples of the original frequency. Some of those harmonics can sit above the elliptical filter's cutoff and remain in the Side signal even after the fundamental has been attenuated. That means post-filtering can produce a mono-compatible low foundation while retaining stereo coloration that was generated from the original bass energy. You are not simply delaying the same cleanup operation. You are allowing material that will later be removed to influence audible content that survives. This behavior explains why a post position can feel richer or more animated even when a spectrum analyzer shows little Side energy left in the sub region. The low frequencies have already changed compressor movement and nonlinear output before the filter performs its final narrowing. Excessive pumping, unstable low-frequency width, or a saturator that becomes coarse when the sub hits are all reasons to clean that energy before processing. Use post when you like the way the full-range Side signal drives the processing but still want a controlled low-frequency stereo image at the output. This can preserve harmonic movement and dynamic interaction while ensuring the final sub region does not retain the same amount of difference information. The two positions should be level-matched before comparison because changed processing can alter apparent loudness. Listen not only to the bass but also to cymbal sustain, room tone, wide guitars, and reverb tails, since those are where upstream compression and newly generated harmonics can reveal the placement change most clearly. A useful test is to keep every module setting fixed and switch only the filter position. If pre sounds steadier, the bass was probably influencing the processors more than you wanted.
