Erdogan Calls for Peaceful Resolution to Rwanda-DRC Conflict During Kagame's Historic Visit. ANKARA, Türkiye —Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for a peaceful resolution to the escalating conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He also offered Türkiye's support in mediation efforts to foster stability in the Great Lakes Region. Erdogan made the remarks during a historic official visit by Rwandan President Paul Kagame. It was the first such visit by a Rwandan head of state to Türkiye. The visit coincides with rising tensions in the region. The M23 rebel group has advanced toward Sake, a key town near the regional capital, Goma, raising fears of further escalation in the volatile eastern DRC. "We hope that the conflict with the Democratic Republic of Congo will be resolved through peaceful means," Erdogan said. He emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution. Erdogan commended Angola's role in mediating direct negotiations between Rwanda and the DRC. He reiterated Türkiye's willingness to contribute to the peace process. "As Türkiye, we are ready to provide any support necessary to resolve this issue," he added. He said this would contribute to stability and peace in the Great Lakes Region. Erdogan cited Türkiye's experience and commitment to mediation efforts across Africa, citing its support in resolving the Ethiopia-Somalia dispute and other regional conflicts. Türkiye's approach is rooted in the principle of "African solutions to African problems," Erdogan explained. It focuses on equal partnership and mutual benefit. Erdogan praised Rwanda's contributions to peace and security in Eastern Africa and the Great Lakes Region. He said Türkiye deeply appreciates Rwanda's efforts in ensuring stability and security. The two leaders discussed strengthening cooperation in areas such as trade, energy, defense, education, and research. Thanks to Turkish investments in Rwanda, bilateral trade has grown from $1 million in the early 2000s to nearly $500 million today. The M23's renewed offensive near Goma has exacerbated tensions and drawn international attention to the urgent need for a negotiated settlement.
