Gabbuza suffered deep cuts to his head and hands during the brutal assault. He bled heavily and lost consciousness several times before help arrived. Medical staff first treated him at Hwange Hospital before moving him to Bulawayo for emergency surgery. The former Water Resources Minister served during the 2009-2013 government period. Parliament recalled him last October but he stayed active in local politics.
