Family seeks justice over Private Obol death in custody

The relatives of Martine Obol want answers about his death. This 26-year-old served as a private in the Special Forces Command before he passed away under strange conditions. His family says other soldiers beat him badly when the Uganda People's Defence Forces locked him up. They claim he never received proper medical help until it was late. Obol died at Mulago hospital on December 31, 2024, around 2 pm.

Nobody faces punishment for what happened to him. William Ochola raised Obol since he was small. He told people Obol came home healthy for Christmas last December. Shortly after Obol went back to work, someone called saying he had been arrested. Reports state that Obol went with a friend to send money from a bank on December 23. He drank alcohol afterward. When he returned to base, he fought with other soldiers because he seemed drunk.

Later that night, people attacked him as he rested. Obol told his family someone hurt his arms and neck during this attack. One person pushed a knee against his neck. By Christmas Day, Obol felt awful pain. He missed his duties because he was in pain everywhere. Officials arrested him instead of helping him. The same soldiers who hurt him first claimed Obol tried to shoot them. He denied these charges completely.

The army held him without clear reasons at first. He appeared once at military court. There, he heard claims against him like attempted murder, being drunk, and using bad words. His health became worse because he lacked good care. The family says doctors examined his body after death without any relatives present. The report showed blood clots in his head and throat - injuries that match someone who suffered physical attacks.

His relatives demand a full investigation into how he died. They also want those responsible to face charges, pay money for damages, and have all his military benefits paid to his family members. Francis Omony, another uncle, said Obol served his country loyally and deserved better treatment from the military. The burial happened on April 3, 2025, at his uncle's home in the Pader district. Obol leaves behind Patricia Aber, his wife, and their two-year-old daughter.

Major Jimmy Omara speaks for the Special Forces Command. He confirmed that doctors examined Obol on March 31, 2025. He refused to share details about what they found. Omara said Obol faced serious charges, including attempted murder. The soldier had already appeared before military judges once. His next court date was scheduled for April 2025, but he died before that day arrived. Omara knew nothing about fights between Obol and other soldiers. He promised to check these claims.

The spokesperson asked the family to use the proper channels for their concerns. However, relatives stay firm about their demands. They believe poor care and abuse inside the military caused a death that should have never happened. They continue seeking justice for their lost family member who died much earlier than he should have.
