Either way, the choice is made per element rather than globally, so a mix can hold twenty different distance decisions at once. Off is the setting that catches people out. It is genuinely useful when you want a lead vocal or a kick anchored, dry, and unprocessed. It is destructive when you apply it to the one element you spent an afternoon animating, because the automation still exists and simply stops being audible as motion. Where you place a source on the near-to-far scale also changes how big the same automation feels. A part simulated close to the head and a part simulated well out in front are not covering the same amount of perceived ground, even with identical position data. Audition the pattern in the mode you actually intend to deliver rather than whichever one the session opened with. [HEADING=2]Apple Music throws your binaural settings away[/HEADING] This is the part that undoes careful work. Apple Music does not use Dolby's binaural renderer for headphone playback. It uses Apple's own Spatial Audio engine, and the DD+JOC codec it relies on ignores every binaural render mode setting in your mix. All four of those settings you agonized over are stripped and replaced with Apple's uniform processing. Near, Mid, Far, and Off stop meaning anything. Whatever you decided about distance is a decision that reaches speaker playback and your own monitoring, and stops there. The practical consequence is that judging [B]how your spatial mix behaves over headphones[/B] becomes partly guesswork. You cannot hear in advance what your mix becomes on the service where a large share of spatial listening happens, so anything whose effect depends entirely on one render mode is a gamble rather than a choice. The safer approach is to make the part work with the distance settings switched around, and treat whatever you land on as a preference instead of a guarantee. [HEADING=2]Plenty of listeners never get the spatial version[/HEADING] Apple's playback control has three states: Automatic, Always On, and Off. Under Automatic, Dolby Atmos only kicks in on compatible equipment, which means Apple or Beats headphones and the built-in speakers of recent iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks. On third-party headphones, Apple's own advice is to switch to Always On instead. Almost nobody does. That is a real slice of your audience receiving the stereo version of the record while you were mixing a part that only makes sense in three dimensions. Apple keeps the stereo mix available deliberately, and listeners can disable Atmos in settings without losing anything they downloaded. Head tracking is a separate toggle again, available on supported headphones and enabled in Control Center rather than in the music app. With it on, the spatial image is referenced to the device rather than the room, so a listener turning their head shifts every position in the mix while your rhythmic pattern keeps running to the grid. None of that argues against animated panning. It argues for auditioning the part twice, once with head tracking active and once without, and asking whether the rhythm still reads when the travel shrinks to a fraction of what your renderer shows you.
