FC Platinum Struggle to Score but Stay Solid at the Back

FC Platinum hasn't been able to find the back of the net lately. The feared football club has scored just twice across five matches—its worst attacking record since joining Zimbabwe's top league in 2011. Norman Mapeza's team has never tallied fewer than six goals at this stage in any previous season. Their defense remains spectacular, though, with only one goal allowed through five games.

Mapeza knows they need goals fast. "It's about belief, about confidence," he says as his team prepares to face GreenFuel at Mandava Stadium today. They'd need five goals to avoid setting an unwanted club record. Despite their scoring woes, many experts still consider FC Platinum title contenders based on their defensive strength.

Their best scoring start came in 2013, when they scored 13 goals through six matches. That year, they beat Buffaloes, How Mine, Black Mambas, and Chicken Inn, lost to Shabanie Mine, and thrashed Triangle. Currently, FC Platinum has earned four points from four draws plus one victory. They're among just three Premier League teams that've conceded just a single goal.

In 2018, FC Platinum didn't allow any goals through five matches—their best defensive start ever. If they keep GreenFuel scoreless today, they'll match their record for the fewest goals conceded through six games. History suggests counting out Mapeza's squad would be foolish—during their four best season starts, they went on to win the championship once.
