FL Studio’s Piano Roll uses its own Snap selector to control how note edits align with the time grid. If the local setting is Main, the Piano Roll follows the Global Snap value in the main toolbar, while choosing a specific local value makes the Piano Roll use that instead. A lot of confusion starts because grid lines, snap behavior, note length, and quantization look related but are not the same control. Fixed Step and Beat choices give you absolute timing divisions, and the FL Studio steps and beats to musical note values mapping keeps those menu values tied to familiar note lengths. Line, Cell, and None behave differently from those fixed divisions. [HEADING=2]Main, Line, and Cell do different jobs[/HEADING] The FL Studio snap settings matter most when the Piano Roll seems to ignore a change you made elsewhere. FL Studio’s Main snap setting means use the Global Snap value. If your Piano Roll is set directly to a Beat, Step, Line, or Cell option, changing Global Snap will not replace that local choice, which is a common reason snapping to grid appears not to be working. Line is not a fixed sixteenth-note or eighth-note grid. It snaps to the nearest visible grid line, and the grid resolution changes as you zoom horizontally. Cell instead snaps an edit to the start of the grid cell it falls inside. If you want to change the Piano Roll grid while keeping a predictable musical division, choose one of the fixed Step or Beat values. Setting snap to Bar is useful when you deliberately want the coarsest musical placement. You can turn off snap to grid by choosing None, but you usually do not need to keep switching the menu for one tiny adjustment. The quickest FL Studio snap-to-grid shortcut is holding Alt while dragging a note, which temporarily bypasses snapping. Release Alt and the previous setting is still there, so fine edits do not wreck the rest of your grid workflow. [HEADING=2]Dragging, quantizing, and recording are separate[/HEADING] Making notes snap to the grid while you drag them does not retroactively fix notes that were already recorded early or late. To snap a selection to the grid after the fact, Quick Quantize can align selected notes using the Global Snap setting, while Quick Quantize Start Times leaves note lengths alone. The advanced Quantizer adds control over timing strength, sensitivity, duration, and groove templates. A broader Piano Roll MIDI workflow can use snap for editing and quantize for cleanup without treating them as the same operation. The Global Snap setting also controls MIDI input quantizing when you want to snap recorded notes to the grid during recording. None, Line, and Cell are not used for input quantizing, so a player expecting Line to straighten incoming MIDI can end up with notes that are not snapping the way the screen suggests. Pick an actual Step, Beat, or Bar value when recording needs a fixed timing target. Note duration is another separate layer. Snap affects resizing, so you can make a note length snap to the grid by dragging its edge with snapping enabled, and right-clicking the Piano Roll Snap control sets the default length used for new notes. Audible duration can still ignore the drawn block when an instrument keeps sounding after note-off, which is why an 808 Piano Roll note length problem may need envelope changes rather than another grid setting. [HEADING=2]A tight grid still leaves room for feel[/HEADING] Snapping every event perfectly is useful for editing, but it is not automatically the best musical result. In FL Studio, snapping notes to the grid is useful when you need structural accuracy, while hi-hats and percussion lean around the grid through small timing and velocity changes. Deliberate offsets are worth leaving alone when they are doing useful rhythmic work. FL Studio’s Snap to scale feature is also a different system from time-grid snapping. Grid snap controls horizontal timing, while scale snap constrains note pitch to a selected key and scale. An 808 can land perfectly on time and still be the wrong harmonic choice, so Ghost channels against changing chords can be more useful than forcing every pitch toward the nearest allowed scale note. When FL Studio notes do not snap as expected, check the local Piano Roll Snap menu first, then see whether it is set to Main and therefore following Global Snap. After that, check whether Line is changing with zoom, whether Alt is being held, and whether the problem is really quantization, note duration, or scale snapping. Those checks separate four different behaviors that can all look like one broken grid.
