The police have plans for Sam Nujoma's events in Windhoek. Nujoma served as the first president, and his memorial is Friday.
His body has already been to six areas across the country during the past two weeks. Police inspector Joseph Shikongo told Desert FM on Wednesday they have kept everything running well.
"We have made sure the program goes forward as planned. From the start until today, we have had no bad events. The program runs very well," he said.
Shikongo thanked people for their good behavior when Nujoma was driven through towns. He hopes everyone keeps helping until the funeral ends.
He promised police would keep everyone safe, including all the important foreign visitors who came. "We stand ready, and things will go ahead as planned. People know what to expect," he said.
The route through Windhoek will match that used for the late president Hage Geingob. Information Minister Emma Theofelus says the body leaves Keetmanshoop Airport at 6:00 a.m. today and should reach the capital by 7:30 a.m.
Nujoma will rest at Parliament Gardens today. On February 27, people can visit to pay respects starting at 4:00 PM.
The big memorial takes place at Independence Stadium on Friday. He will be buried at Heroes' Acre on Saturday.
The government will help transport Khomas residents to both the memorial and burial. "We are working on all the details right now. We cannot control the weather for these dates. We also try to plan for how many people might come," Theofelus says.
Many foreign countries will send representatives. These include Angola, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Finland, Cuba, and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
"More countries may still tell us they are coming as we get closer to the burial date," Theofelus says.
The street procession today starts at Hosea Kutako International Airport. It moves through the Trans-Kalahari Corridor to Sam Nujoma Drive, then to Mandume Ndemufayo Road, David Hosea Meroro Road, Hendrik Witbooi Drive, and Moses Garoëb Street.
From there it turns onto Winnie Madikizela Mandela Road, Independence Avenue, back to Sam Nujoma Drive, then Robert Mugabe Drive before reaching Parliament Gardens.
