Police caught four men from different countries trying to steal gold from Chinese smugglers. The courts charged these guys Tuesday with planning to rob someone carrying gold across the border. The group included a man from Singapore, one from China, and two guys from Sierra Leone. They stood before a judge in Harare who told them only the High Court could grant them bail. On February 27, a Singapore man named Gohga Kan asked a local Zimbabwe resident named Ozias Matsikete to help rob a car heading to Zambia. Kan bragged he already had two guns but needed more people for his plan. The local man went straight to police detectives instead of joining the crime. Matsikete worked with police to catch these criminals red-handed. Kan picked the town of Karoi because it is close to Zambia, where he planned to take the stolen gold. Police pretended to be criminals and rode with Matsikete to meet Kan outside Karoi. Kan showed them exactly where he wanted to attack the car—a spot with bad road damage that would force drivers to slow down. The group planned their attack for March 9, with Kan bringing two Sierra Leone men to help. Early on March 9, Kan told Matsikete they spotted their target—a Toyota Prado with Zambian license plates. Police quickly moved in at a highway toll booth and arrested everyone. They found over four kilograms of gold hidden behind the car radio. The police also arrested the other two men waiting in Karoi and found two illegal pistols. All four suspects must return to court on March 18.
